Before I boarded the plane to Kauai, with a stop-over in Maui, from SFO, my husband said: “Don’t think you’re doing this and not coming back wanting to do it.” Do what, you may be wondering? Crew chief duties for Michele Santilhano, 3rd female finisher of Epic5 Challenge. (5 Full Iron distance triathlons in 5 days!)
Thinking back at this exchange with my husband, I simultaneously have to laugh (because it sounded utterly ridiculous that I could EVER handle something like that) and also recognize that my husband knows me best and may be onto something… While I have no immediate plans to take on an Epic5 Challenge myself, I have amplified plans to take my own athletic bucket list items to new heights. During my experience of Epic5, I crewed with some AMAZING athletes including Suzy Degazon, 5-time Ultraman Hawaii finisher + Lisa Ledesma, multiple Ironman finisher, incredible hostess and trail-runner, who has been involved with Epic5 since the beginning. Both of these women have incredible hearts and it was a true pleasure to navigate, explore and support our athlete through the beauty of the Hawaiian islands. They also made me laugh harder than I can EVER remember! They inspire me to add more to my bucket list.
Speaking of bucket list inspiration, let’s talk about Michele Santilhano. Being fairly new to road cycling (I’m in 6 years in.. many more to go), I have been working on my climbing cadence for years. I’ve ridden local hills in the SF Bay Area with Michele many times; she likes to go for hours or was it days? I can’t remember :) Watching her spin through the beautiful roads of Molokai at a solid cadence is something I will never forget. She had completed two Ironman triathlons two days before and was spinning like she just hopped on a bike for a spin class.
Since returning from this adventure, my mind has been overflowing with ideas for blog articles; tidbits and stories I’ve wanted to share with everyone, tales of inspiration that I witnessed up close and personal, an experience that will energize me going forward, not only in life, but in my own athletic pursuits.
Rather than share everything on my site, I am joining a group of individuals for an amazing change-the-world kind of organization, in which I will weave in stories of my recent adventure, focusing on health, fitness, nutrition and inspiration. More on that to come - stay tuned!
